More than a white coat

The Maltese offers plenty of companion-dog appeal, but a tidy photograph can hide the daily work behind it. Dogs Australia describes a lively, alert dog with an intelligent, sweet-tempered breed ideal. Individual temperament still varies, and grooming, training and company should be part of the decision from day one. Dogs Australia breed standard

A Maltese may fit a smaller home when its needs are met. Floor area alone does not answer the more useful questions: can the dog access a toilet area, get regular activity, rest without disturbance and cope with your normal working day? A small breed is not a shortcut around those responsibilities.

Exercise and learning

Plan daily opportunities to walk, sniff, play and practise useful skills. Keep sessions appropriate to the individual rather than measuring success against another dog's stamina. Indoors, simple search games and short training lessons can add variety when the weather limits outings, but they should not become a permanent replacement for outdoor experiences.

Reward calm greetings, coming when called and relaxing on a mat. Build toilet habits with frequent opportunities and a predictable routine. Start cooperative handling early: touching a paw, showing a brush and briefly examining the mouth can each earn a reward. Small steps help make future grooming less stressful than trying to complete everything in one sitting.

Choose a realistic grooming routine

A long coat requires regular careful brushing and combing to prevent tangles reaching the skin. A manageable pet trim can reduce the workload, but does not remove the need for maintenance. Discuss coat length, brushing tools and appointment frequency with a groomer before deciding what you can sustain. The AKC's care guidance specifically highlights daily attention for a long Maltese coat. AKC Maltese care

Keep the area around the eyes comfortable and clean without experimenting with harsh cosmetic products. New or excessive discharge should be assessed rather than treated as a beauty problem. Do not promise an allergy-free household on the basis of coat type; anyone with allergies should obtain appropriate medical advice before committing.

Family fit and health

Gentle children and a Maltese can enjoy shared games, provided adults supervise and prevent rough lifting or chasing. Protect sleep and meals, and let the dog approach rather than insisting on cuddles. For a busy household, also consider who will provide company and practise short, comfortable periods apart.

Ask about kneecap, heart and liver-health screening. The American Maltese Association's published health statement discusses patella and congenital heart checks and recommends bile-acid testing, particularly for puppies. These are discussion points with your veterinarian, not a claim that an overseas programme is an Australian legal requirement or that screening guarantees future health. Dental care also belongs in the budget. Ask your vet to demonstrate tooth brushing and advise when professional assessment is needed. Cornell dental-care guidance

Ask before buying or adopting

- Can I see actual screening reports and discuss any abnormal findings? - What coat care is this dog accustomed to, and can you demonstrate it? - What has been learned about the dog's behaviour alone and around children? - Are there dental, skin or other ongoing treatment costs? - What support and return arrangements are available?
